Use Different Outgoing and Incoming Mail Servers with Eudora 5.1 (Macintosh)
Mail accounts in Eudora are based on entities called Personalities.
Each personality contains an Incoming Mail (POP) server, an Outgoing Mail (SMTP)
server, and one username/password combination to be used on both accounts.
For situations in which the username/password combination are the same for
Incoming Mail (POP) and Outgoing Mail (SMTP), a single Personality will
suffice.
However, for situations in which the Incoming Mail (POP) and Outgoing Mail
(SMTP) servers do NOT share the same username/password combination, a single
Personality will not work. Two Personalities are required to
work with cases in which the Incoming Mail (POP) and Outgoing Mail (SMTP)
servers do NOT share the same username/password combination. These steps
are outlined below:
Create the Personality used to Send Mail
| Step 1. Using the Window menu, select Personalities |
 |
This will open the Personalities window.
| The <<Dominant>> personality is the default personality used
by Eudora. This personality will hold the account information needed
to send mail. (SMTP) |
 |
The Personalities window has a group of four icons in the lower left-hand
column. However, until a personality is selected, none of the icons will
be enabled.
| Step 2. Select the <<Dominant>> personality in the
Personalities window and select the right-most icon at the bottom of the
window. |
 |
This will open the Settings window with the Personalities category selected
on the left side.
| Step 3. Change the Personalities information for the
<<Dominant>> personality. |
 |
Enter the information in the Settings window as follows:
Checking Mail
| Item |

| Username: |
enter your Outgoing Mail (SMTP) username |
| Mail Server |
enter your Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server |
| Check mail every 5 minutes |

| SMTP Server: |
enter your Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server |
| Return Address |

This completes the <<Dominant>> personality setup. Now a personality
will be created to handle incoming mail.
Create the Personality used to Retrieve Mail
| Step 4. Click the "New" button to create a new
personality. Name the personality "Retrieving" as in the image. |
 |
Enter the information in the Settings window for the Retrieving personality as follows:

This completes the Retrieving personality setup.
SSL Configuration for POP/IMAP and SMTP
In order for Eudora to work with the Exchange 2000 server, SSL
(secure sockets layer) technology must be used by POP/IMAP email programs.
The following screen shows the settings to use for SSL when connecting to
the Exchange 2000 server.
Step 5. Scroll downward in the left pane of the Settings window
and select SSL. The settings to use are as follows:
- POP - Required (Alternate Port)
- SMTP - Required (TLS)
- IMAP - Required (Alternate Port)
|
 |
With a personality (<<Dominant>>) used only to send mail and a personality
(Retrieving) used only to retrieve mail, use a filter to use both personalities
together.
Set up a Filter to Use Personalities
| Step 6. Using the Window menu, select Filters to open
the Filters window. |
 |
When the Filters window opens, there should be no filters installed, so the
Filters tab on the Filters window will be disabled.
| Step 7. Create a new filter by clicking the "New"
button. |
 |
This action will start the creation of a filter which will use the
<<Dominant>> and Retrieving profiles together to send and retrieve mail.
| Step 8. Make the changes to the Filters window as
illustrated. |
 |
The settings to be made to the Match section of the Filters window are as
follows:
| Field (Match
Section) |

| Incoming |
check |
| Outgoing |
uncheck |
| Manual |
check |
| Header |
select <<Personality>> from drop-down list |
| List box below and to the left of "Header" |
change to "is" from "Contains" |
| Textbox adjacent to the "is" list box |
type "Retrieving" |
The settings to be made to the Actions section of the Filters window are as
follows:
| Field (Actions

| Top drop-down list |
change to "Make Personality" |
| Drop-down list next to "Make Personality" |
select <<Dominant>> from drop-down list |
| Drop-down list immediately below "Make Personality" |
select "Skip Rest" |
After closing the Filters window, a prompt will appear to save the profile.
| Step 9. Click the "Save" button to save the filter. |
 |
After the Filter is saved, Eudora will be able to use different Incoming and
Outgoing mail servers at the same time.
NOTE: Whenever the program is started, you will be prompted to enter
your SMTP password the first time you send email and you will be prompted to
enter your POP password the first time you retrieve email.
